A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT

relating to providing for public safety during interactions between 
law enforcement officers and persons with mental impairments.
	BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:                        
	SECTION 1.  Section 1701.402, Occupations Code, is amended 
by adding Subsection (g) to read as follows:
	(g)  As a requirement for an intermediate proficiency 
certificate, an officer must complete an education and training 
program on descalation and crisis intervention techniques with 
persons with mentally impairments established by the commission.
	SECTION 2.  Section 1701.402, Occupations Code, is amended 
by adding Subsection (h) to read as follows:
	(h)  As a requirement for an advanced or a master proficiency 
certificate, an officer must obtain a mental health peace officer 
certification established by the commission under Section 
1701.404.
