A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
relating to the operation of a motor vehicle in certain counties.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
SECTION 1. The heading of Section 502.185, Transportation
Code, is amended to read as follows:
Sec. 502.185. REFUSAL TO REGISTER VEHICLE BY [IN CERTAIN]
COUNTIES OR DEPARTMENT.
SECTION 2. Section 502.185(a), Transportation Code, is
amended to read as follows:
(a) A county assessor-collector or the department may
refuse to register a motor vehicle if:
(1) the owner of the vehicle is a resident of a county
with a population of more than 3 million; and
(2) the assessor-collector or the department receives
information that the owner of the vehicle owes a [the] county in
this state money for a fine, fee, or tax that is past due.
SECTION 3. This Act applies only to the registration of a
motor vehicle that is applied for on or after the effective date of
this Act.
SECTION 4. This Act takes effect September 1, 2005.
