A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
relating to the hours of work of corrections officers employed by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: SECTION 1. Chapter 493, Government Code, is amended by adding Section 493.0072 to read as follows: Sec. 493.0072. HOURS OF WORK OF CORRECTIONS OFFICERS. (a) A corrections officer may not be required to work more hours during a calendar week than the number of hours in the normal workweek of the majority of other department employees. (b) The department may require a corrections officer to work more hours than allowed by Subsection (a) if the department determines an emergency exists that requires the officer to work extra hours. (c) A corrections officer who elects to work extra hours during a calendar week shall be compensated on a basis consistent with overtime provisions of the department personnel policy. SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2005.
