A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
relating to increasing funding for sheriffs in certain small border counties. BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 411, Government Code, is amended by adding Section 411.0093 to read as follows: Sec. 411.0093. LOCAL COOPERATION WITH SHERIFFS; GRANTS. (a) The department may make grants to a county for a sheriff in that county, if the county: (1) has a population of less than 150,000; and (2) is within 250 miles of an international border. (b) In determining whether to award a grant under this section, the department shall consider the extent to which the sheriff will use the money to enhance homeland security and fight drug trafficking. (c) The department may adopt rules regarding application and eligibility requirements under this section. SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this Act takes effect September 1, 2005.
