H.C.R. No. 3
HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Lone Star State is home to thousands of brave men
and women who have taken the oath to protect and serve the public,
and these dedicated law enforcement officers must often place
themselves in harm's way to safeguard the lives of their fellow
citizens; and
WHEREAS, On February 24, 2005, 12 members of Tyler's law
enforcement community risked possible death or grave injury while
attempting to subdue an armed assailant, outfitted with body armor
and a semiautomatic weapon, on the grounds of the Smith County
Courthouse; and
WHEREAS, The immediate and well-coordinated response of
these courageous individuals, who willingly entered the line of
fire, prevented additional loss of life after two individuals were
killed during the initial assault; the unexpected attack and the
subsequent gunfight also resulted in four others being injured; and
WHEREAS, The six members of the Tyler Police Department who
intervened in the incident include Detective Clay Perrett, traffic
officers Mike Gray and Jason Seeton, Officer Hal Schlattner,
Officer Wayne Allen, and Sergeant Russell Jacks; and
WHEREAS, Representatives from the Smith County Sheriff's
Department who helped bring down the gunman were Sergeant Alan
Langston, Lieutenant Marlin Suell, Deputy Michael Strickland,
Deputy John Smith, and Deputy Sherman Dollison; Deputy Dollison was
seriously wounded in the attack but is improving daily; and
WHEREAS, Also involved in this violent and frightening
altercation was Smith County District Attorney Investigator Jim
Castle; and
WHEREAS, Thanks to the actions of these outstanding law
enforcement professionals, untold lives were spared on that
February day, and the citizens of Tyler owe a tremendous debt of
gratitude to these brave men; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas
hereby honor these dedicated law enforcement officers for
protecting their fellow citizens and extend best wishes to those
who were injured for a full and speedy recovery; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the officers as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
