H.C.R. No. 8  


HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Over the course of a brilliant career, race car driver Dale Earnhardt gained universal renown for his exceptional talent and for a driving style so bold and intense that it routinely overpowered other competitors; and WHEREAS, Known as "The Intimidator," Mr. Earnhardt is considered one of the greatest NASCAR drivers of all time; sure and rugged, with his trademark moustache and black No. 3 Chevrolet car, he quickly became a familiar icon to the American public, defining a generation of drivers, and was the first race car driver ever to be featured on a box of Wheaties; and WHEREAS, In his 26 years of fearless and skillful racing, Mr. Earnhardt garnered 76 Cup Series victories, 7 Cup Series championships, and a record 34 wins at the Daytona International Speedway; ranked sixth on the all-time victory list, he was the first driver to win the Rookie of the Year award and the Cup Series title in consecutive seasons; and WHEREAS, Mr. Earnhardt's outstanding abilities earned him lasting fame in racing history, just as his unique character and strength won him a special place in the hearts of many Americans, and it is most appropriate that he be remembered on the date of his birth; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby designate April 29, 2005, as Dale Earnhardt Day in Texas and pay special tribute to the life of this remarkable man.
