H.C.R. No. 36 


HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, More than a quarter-century has passed since the end of American military involvement in Vietnam, and the men and women who served our nation during that era deserve a lasting tribute for their loyalty and patriotic service to their state and nation; and WHEREAS, More than 3,400 Texans died while serving in Vietnam, and countless others, both men and women, demonstrated courage and dignity in that conflict and together with their fallen comrades merit recognition of their contributions and sacrifice in the form of a monument in proximity to the Capitol; and WHEREAS, Under Chapter 443, Government Code, and rules of the State Preservation Board, a portion of the north Capitol grounds is available for new monuments, subject to legislative approval, specified procedural requirements, the provision of funding from private donors, conformity to certain size and design limitations and parameters, and completion on a timely basis; and WHEREAS, Members of the house of representatives and senate find a commemorative structure in honor of Texans who served in Vietnam to be a worthy addition to the Capitol grounds and to the incorporation there of works that will convey to visitors a sense of history and utmost respect for those who have seen combat and otherwise demonstrated patriotic commitment in behalf of others; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby authorize the State Preservation Board, subject to state law and rules of the board, to approve and permit the construction of a monument on the Capitol grounds recognizing Texans who fought or otherwise served, and in many cases gave their lives, in the Vietnam War as part of this nation's armed forces; and, be it further RESOLVED, That the Texas secretary of state forward an official copy of this resolution to the executive director of the State Preservation Board.
