CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The year 2005 marks a historic milestone for the H-E-B grocery store chain founded in Kerrville as it celebrates 100 years of growth and prosperity; and WHEREAS, The C.C. Butt Grocery Store opened for business in the Central Texas town on November 26, 1905; established by Florence Butt, the market was funded by a $60 investment and a desire to provide staples and extraordinary products to the citizens of Kerr County; and WHEREAS, During the 20th century, the Butt family built the grocery business from its humble beginnings in a 750-square-foot facility to its prestigious present-day status as the 10th-largest privately held company in the country, with annual sales of over $11 billion; today, H-E-B operates nearly 300 grocery stores throughout Texas and Mexico, staffed by more than 55,000 employees; and WHEREAS, This Lone Star institution was the product of grand ideas and a keen concern for customer convenience and needs; H-E-B installed its first in-store meat market and delicatessen in 1919 and introduced the H-E-B MarketPlace in 1991, with in-store restaurants and a wood-burning pizza oven from Italy; and WHEREAS, Over the past century, H-E-B has been at the forefront of technological advances and innovative business concepts, which have included air-conditioned facilities, frozen foods, and offering a host of unique services and products within a single establishment; and WHEREAS, In addition to earning a reputation as an exceptional grocer, H-E-B is also a generous contributor to the communities it serves; in an effort to give back to the region that nurtured the first fledgling store, the company recently gave Kerrville's Sid Peterson Memorial Hospital a $250,000 gift to build a heart catheterization suite; and WHEREAS, Keeping pace with the community that is its home, H-E-B is opening a grand new store occupying more than 75,000 square feet in Kerrville, where residents past and present have enjoyed the fruits of the company's success; and WHEREAS, A model of business ingenuity, hard work, and exceptional customer service, H-E-B continues to serve citizens of Kerrville with the high professional standards that have characterized this business since its founding a century ago; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby honor the 100th anniversary of the first H-E-B store in Kerrville and extend to all those associated with the company sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the Kerrville H-E-B as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
