CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Members of the Texas Legislature are proud to join their fellow citizens in celebration of Mount Pleasant/Titus County Day at the State Capitol on March 2, 2005; and WHEREAS, Located in the Pine Belt of Northeast Texas, Titus County was created from portions of Bowie and Red River Counties in May 1846 and was organized two months later with Mount Pleasant as its county seat; and WHEREAS, The region once boasted a thriving timber industry, and today it enjoys a vibrant and diversified economy based on agribusiness, industry, tourism, and wholesale and retail trade; and WHEREAS, Much of the region's success is a result of the emphasis its citizens place on providing students with a quality education; the Mount Pleasant Independent School District maintains an exceptional student to teacher ratio of 13.4 to 1, and Northeast Texas Community College, located in Mount Pleasant, is a highly respected institution of higher learning; and WHEREAS, Though it is a growing, modern community, Mount Pleasant has retained its rustic charm, earning widespread acclaim for its warm and friendly atmosphere; it has been named one of the 100 Best Small Towns in America and designated a Texas Main Street City as well; and WHEREAS, Visitors and residents alike enjoy exploring Titus County's vast array of cultural and natural resources; Mount Pleasant is surrounded by Lake Bob Sandlin, Lake Cypress Springs, Lake Monticello, and Lake Welch, where sports enthusiasts can hone their fishing skills and partake in a variety of water sports at these magnificent waterways; and WHEREAS, Individuals of all ages can enjoy many outdoor activities throughout the year at the area's nine parks, and nature lovers delight in viewing the area's colorful spring wildflowers and impressive fall foliage; tourists can make their visit to the area complete by visiting its impressive art center or by learning more about its unique past at one of Mount Pleasant's informative museums; and WHEREAS, Rich in culture and tradition, Mount Pleasant and Titus County are prosperous, forward-looking communities whose industrious residents are leading participants in the state's dynamic growth, and it is truly a pleasure to salute this fine region and its people on this auspicious occasion; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby designate March 2, 2005, as Mount Pleasant/Titus County Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the Titus County delegation on their visit to Austin.
