                                                                H.C.R. No. 106


HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Those Texans who give freely of their time and talents to benefit the larger community make the world a better place through their actions and their example, and the Honorable G. Thane Akins of Midland is one such person; and WHEREAS, Born in Brady in 1933 to Robert and Evelyn Huff Akins, Thane Akins graduated from Brady High School and went on to earn bachelor's degrees from both Abilene Christian College and Texas Tech University; he soon thereafter began a successful career as a petroleum engineer with ARCO and distinguished himself as Permian Basin section chair of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and as the recipient of the Engineer of the Year award in 1982; and WHEREAS, From 1976 to 1980, Mr. Akins served the citizens of Midland as a member of the Midland City Council, and his election as mayor in 1980 is further proof of the esteem and admiration in which he is held by the community; during his six years in that post, Mayor Akins made vital contributions to Midland and to West Texas; he was highly instrumental in securing the construction of the Ivey Reservoir, in improving facilities at Midland International Airport, and in instigating area-wide endeavors to spur economic development, such as the superconducting supercollider; during a time of significant economic downturn, he helped guide the city of Midland through a period of healthy growth while holding taxes to a minimum; and WHEREAS, A man of unwavering faith, Mr. Akins has served as an elder of the Church of Christ for 30 years, sharing his beliefs with others through teaching and mentoring; moreover, he has maintained a lifelong commitment to Christian education as the board president of Midland Christian School and as an active trustee of Abilene Christian College in its transition to Abilene Christian University; and WHEREAS, Mr. Akins has also contributed to the betterment of his community with his support of the Midland Boys Club and the local Optimist Club; a man of many talents and interests, he is a flying enthusiast as well as a 46-year member of the Sun Country Gentlemen Barbershop Chorus and the anchor of the Mayor's Forum Barbershop Quartet; and WHEREAS, This exceptional civic leader's commitment to Midland and to his faith are perhaps equaled only by his devotion to his family; for nearly 48 years, he has enjoyed the love and support of his wife, Jean, and together they take great pride in their children, Rex and Kara, and their six grandchildren; and WHEREAS, Although it is impossible to fully gauge the impact of a man's life, some individuals leave their unmistakable mark on the world as they move through it, and the contributions of Thane Akins to his community continue to resonate in the lives of all who know him; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby commend the Honorable G. Thane Akins for his many efforts in behalf of his fellow Texans; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Akins as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
