H.C.R. No. 110
HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The East Texas Oil Field was discovered on October
3, 1930, after Columbus Marion "Dad" Joiner, a wildcatter from
Oklahoma, and his geologist friend, Dr. A. D. Lloyd, persuaded an
experienced driller to help them find the largest oil field in the
world; and
WHEREAS, The driller, Ed Laster, hit a pot of black gold with
the Daisy Bradford No. 3, discovering a giant oil field that
measured 42 miles north to south and covered 400 square miles in
parts of five East Texas counties; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the years, Rusk, Gregg, Smith, Upshur,
and Cherokee Counties have produced more than six billion barrels
of oil; the oil field even supplied fuel to military vehicles during
World War II; and
WHEREAS, In 1980, on the occasion of the field's 50th
anniversary, the East Texas Oil Museum opened on the campus of
Kilgore College; a gift from Placid Oil Company and the children of
the late H. L. Hunt, the museum preserves the history of the oil
field and honors the achievements of Mr. Hunt, who purchased the
Daisy Bradford No. 3 and nearby leases from Mr. Joiner, and all the
independent oil men who pioneered the development of this
significant discovery; and
WHEREAS, To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the East Texas
Oil Field throughout 2005, individuals from the five counties are
throwing parties in their respective cities, culminating with a
final, grand event being held on October 3, 2005, in Kilgore; and
WHEREAS, The discovery of the East Texas Oil Field forever
changed the lives of many residents of this fine region of the Lone
Star State, and it is a pleasure to recognize its storied history on
this special occasion; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas
hereby commemorate the 75th anniversary of the discovery of the
East Texas Oil Field and congratulate all those who are involved
with this year's festivities.
