H.C.R. No. 114

HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Camp Fannin Association World War II Memorial is being dedicated on the campus of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler on April 2, 2005, ensuring that those who pass by will never forget the courage and sacrifices made by members of America's greatest generation; and WHEREAS, Named for Colonel James Walker Fannin, who was killed at the Battle of Goliad, Camp Fannin was opened as a training facility for U.S. military personnel in 1943, and an estimated 200,000 servicemen were trained there before it was deactivated in June 1946; and WHEREAS, A large portion of the land that Camp Fannin occupied was later deeded to the State of Texas and is now the site of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler, but even though the physical evidence of the camp's existence has largely disappeared, its legacy lives on; and WHEREAS, The memorial, a bronze statue of an infantryman, is unusual in that it pays tribute to members of the merchant marine as well as those of the army, navy, marines, and coast guard, and this stirring salute to the sacrifices of the World War II generation is an apt expression of the nation's admiration and gratitude; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby commemorate the dedication of the Camp Fannin Association World War II Memorial on the campus of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler and commend all those who joined in the effort to bring this meaningful project to fruition.
