CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Memories of a life filled with many joyful times and meaningful accomplishments may comfort the family and friends of Dorothy Turner Scharbauer of Midland, who passed away on February 23, 2005, at the age of 73; and WHEREAS, Born on March 9, 1931, to Fred Turner, Jr., and Juliette Miller Turner, in Midland County, Mrs. Scharbauer graduated from Midland High School, and attended the University of Colorado at Boulder and Christian College in Columbus, Missouri; she married Clarence Scharbauer, Jr., on August 27, 1949, and became the proud mother of four children; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Scharbauer, a descendant of a Midland oil family, was known for raising champion Thoroughbreds at Valor Farm, a 400-acre facility; in 1987, Alysheba, a Thoroughbred co-owned with her daughter, won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes; the following year, he won the Breeder's Cup Classic and was named the Horse of the Year in Thoroughbred racing; two of her stallions also topped the Texas Thoroughbred Association's list of leading sires in the state for 2004; and WHEREAS, A true community leader, Mrs. Scharbauer was an active supporter of the Museum of the Southwest at Turner Mansion, which was her childhood home; furthermore, she and her husband made substantial contributions to Midland College, including $1 million to the Chaparral Circle Endowment Fund; to honor the couple, the school named a recently restored facility the Dorothy and Clarence Scharbauer, Jr., Student Center; and WHEREAS, An active member of First Presbyterian Church, the National Society Magna Charta Dames, Midland Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and the Junior League of Midland, she was known for her extraordinary support for people and organizations in need; and WHEREAS, Dorothy Scharbauer was a quietly elegant woman, and with her grace and generosity made the city of Midland a better place to live; she will be deeply missed by her friends, family, and all those who were privileged to have been touched by her kindness; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby pay tribute to the life of Dorothy Turner Scharbauer and extend deepest sympathy to the members of her family: to her husband, Clarence Scharbauer, Jr.; to her sons, Clarence Scharbauer III and his wife, Kerry, Douglas Scharbauer and his wife, Karen, Chris Scharbauer and his wife, LaVonne; to her daughter, Pamela Ruth Scharbauer; to her grandchildren, Charlotte Scharbauer French and her husband, Kirk, Kelly Katherine Scharbauer, Douglas Scharbauer, Jr., and his wife, Mauri, Sarah Anne Scharbauer, Daniel Charles Scharbauer, Christen Scharbauer, Meghan Scharbauer, John Christian Scharbauer, Audra Scharbauer, and Rachelle Clare Scharbauer; and to her other relatives and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in memory of Dorothy Turner Scharbauer.
