CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Texas is known throughout the world for the
excellence of its agricultural bounty, and among the state's most
appreciated offerings to the world of fine cuisine is the delicious
fare known as the mushroom; and
WHEREAS, The Lone Star State's great geographical diversity
has made it home to thousands of species of mushrooms, and varieties
found as far afield as Malaysia, Europe, and South America thrive
side-by-side within the borders of our state; and
WHEREAS, Madisonville has long been recognized as essential
to the state's mushroom trade, as this friendly town is home to a
farm operated by Monterey Mushrooms, the nation's largest grower,
shipper, and marketer of mushrooms; and
WHEREAS, The community's identity as a center for mushroom
production is further underscored by the annual Texas Mushroom
Festival, which attracts visitors from near and far to sample
mushroom-based dishes prepared by celebrity chefs and enjoy such
unique events as mushroom-growing demonstrations; and
WHEREAS, The justifiable civic pride taken in this popular
local product is eloquent testimony to the mutually beneficial
relationship enjoyed between Madisonville and mushrooms, and this
long and positive association is indeed worthy of official
recognition; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas
hereby designate Madisonville the Mushroom Capital of Texas.
