CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The mock trial team of Tivy High School in Kerrville successfully competed against 23 other teams to win the moot court state championship in Dallas on March 5, 2005; and WHEREAS, The Dallas Bar Association Mock Trial Committee administers the statewide high school mock trial program, which was established in 1979 to help students interested in potential careers as lawyers, public speakers, and politicians gain valuable insight into the workings of a courtroom environment; and WHEREAS, In January, Tivy High School's 11-member team was assigned this year's fictitious case, Texhoma v. Kelly Cooper, for which the students had to prepare from the perspective of every player in the courtroom, from the defense attorney to a witness on the stand; in their preparations, the students enjoyed the advice of local attorneys and judges, who volunteered to coach the team; and WHEREAS, Under the guidance of coordinator Vicki Yates, the winning team includes the following talented members: team captain Mason Thomas, Katie Beck, Hannah Bockhoff, Camden Chancellor, Phillip Chancellor, Jared Cheney, Austin Cranford, Kelvin Douglas, Schreiner Parker, Joey Reed, and Ricci Rees; the students are currently planning their upcoming trip to the national competition May 5-7, 2005, in Charlotte, North Carolina; and WHEREAS, Demonstrating the commitment to excellence that marks true champions, the members of the Tivy mock trial team are a source of tremendous pride to their families, friends, and the community of Kerrville; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby congratulate the members of the Tivy High School Mock Trial Team for winning the 2005 Texas Moot Court Championship and extend to them sincere best wishes for success in the national competition; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
