H.C.R. No. 140HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives and Senate are pleased to welcome the medical students and residents visiting the State Capitol on this day, April 5, 2005; and WHEREAS, Medical schools and teaching hospitals in Texas play a vital role in furnishing the trained physicians that this state needs in order to provide quality health care for all its citizens; and WHEREAS, Texas currently has eight medical schools and four regional academic health centers, facilities that offer clinical training to more than 5,000 men and women; in addition, it has 468 accredited residency programs, which prepare physicians to practice in a specific medical specialty; and WHEREAS, From the standpoint of patient care, residency programs contribute immeasurably to the Texas health care system; residents provide medical services to countless patients, and typically tag-team to provide around-the-clock coverage at teaching hospitals, which generally deal with the most difficult medical cases; and WHEREAS, As the state grows and its population ages, there will be a growing need for well-trained and compassionate physicians; and WHEREAS, For Texas to continue to be a strong and productive state, access to quality health care must be assured, and medical students and residents are a vital component of the state's future; they and all those associated with medical schools and teaching hospitals are most deserving of special recognition for their invaluable work; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby honor the medical students, medical schools, residents, and teaching hospitals of Texas for their contributions to the health and well-being of citizens of the Lone Star State and welcome the medical personnel who have traveled to Austin for this occasion.
