CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Blood-related cancers currently afflict more than 710,000 Americans, and an estimated 110,000 new cases are diagnosed each year; and WHEREAS, In 2005 alone, some 55,000 men, women, and children in the United States will die from leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma; among children, the most common form of leukemia is acute lymphocytic leukemia, and thanks to the efforts of countless individuals, the survival rate for this strain of the disease has risen from four percent in 1960 to approximately 80 percent today; and WHEREAS, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is dedicated to finding cures for these diseases and to supporting those individuals who suffer from blood-related cancers; since 1954, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society has awarded more than $360 million in research grants; and WHEREAS, Through its Texas offices, the society provides support to patients and their families across the state, developing over 400 family support groups at some 63 society chapters nationwide; these support groups conduct life-enhancing patient services, including peer counseling and patient financial aid; the society also hosts numerous conferences, teleconferences, and webcasts through which leading medical professionals share the latest research findings; and WHEREAS, The State of Texas is likewise committed to supporting the search for cures, and the Texas House of Representatives and Senate encourage private efforts to enhance research funding and education programs aimed at combating and treating leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby designate July 1, 2005, as Leukemia and Lymphoma Awareness Day in Texas and pay tribute to those Texans engaged in the fight against these diseases; and, be it further RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature also congratulate the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society on the establishment of its Central Texas chapter.
