HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, John Shero, volunteer advocate for youth, minister of the Second and Wallace Street Church of Christ in San Saba, and beloved family man, passed away on October 21, 2004, at the age of 75; and WHEREAS, Mr. Shero dedicated much of his life to the service of youth in Texas; in the 1970s, he was instrumental in fostering care for homeless children in Cherokee, Texas, through the development of the Cherokee Home for Children; over the last 20 years, Mr. Shero's volunteer efforts for the Texas Youth Commission have touched the lives of many youth, including those at the Ron Jackson State Juvenile Correctional Complex in Brownwood, Texas, and the Corsicana Residential Treatment Center; and WHEREAS, Mr. Shero served for four years as president of the San Saba Community Resource Council and was serving his second two-year term as vice president of the State Volunteer Resource Council, a statewide organization of people who donate time and resources to the children committed to the care of the Texas Youth Commission; and WHEREAS, Mr. Shero played a vital role in opening the San Saba State School juvenile correctional facility in 1996, and the youth of the facility benefited from his ongoing commitment as a volunteer worship and Bible study leader, a surrogate parent, and a trusted confidant; and WHEREAS, The San Saba State School juvenile correctional facility is a secure, high-restriction juvenile correctional facility with more than 300 staff and the capacity to serve more than 350 male youths committed by juvenile courts across Texas, but it also depends on the support of compassionate volunteers exemplified by Mr. Shero for the effective treatment of the children in its care; and WHEREAS, It is indeed fitting that Mr. Shero be recognized for his achievements, distinguished leadership, and commitment to the care of the neediest of Texas' children, and that this recognition be in association with a facility that he helped found and that emulates his mission of service; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby direct the Texas Building and Procurement Commission to rename the San Saba State School juvenile correctional facility for John Shero as a tribute to his commitment to improving the lives of disadvantaged children in Texas; and, be it further RESOLVED, That the secretary of state forward an official copy of this resolution to the chair and the executive director of the Texas Building and Procurement Commission.
