H.C.R. No. 161


HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Paris Junior College men's basketball team captured the 2005 National Junior College Athletic Association championship, the school's first national title in basketball, and this significant achievement is most deserving of special legislative recognition; and WHEREAS, After earning a berth in the national tournament by winning the NJCAA Region XIV state tournament, the unranked Dragons proceeded to string together several impressive victories on their way to the championship title; and WHEREAS, This talented team conquered Pratt Community College in the first round before knocking off Highland Community College in the quarterfinals; the Dragons then defeated sixth-ranked College of Southern Idaho in the semifinals and sixteenth-ranked Moberly Area Community College in the finals to claim the championship crown; and WHEREAS, Led by Coach Bill Foy, who schooled his team in basketball fundamentals while emphasizing the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship, the Dragons completed the season with a 28-9 record, setting a school record for victories in a season; he was aided in his efforts by assistant coach Brad Enright and student assistants Tyler Easthouse and Patrick Thompson; and WHEREAS, Team members include tournament MVP Roderick Earls, Alexander Starr, Lamar Searight, Donnell Franklyn, Rickey Quarles, Charles Stoker, Jr., Michael Battle, Brian Burrell, Tyler Best, Bobby Joshua, Joel Green, and Albert Reese; and WHEREAS, Winning a national championship is a remarkable accomplishment, and the memory of this victory will remain with these talented student-athletes for years to come; their dedication and commitment to excellence, both on the court and off, have earned them the respect of family and friends alike, and their efforts have brought great pride to the students, faculty, and staff of Paris Junior College; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby congratulate Coach Bill Foy and the Paris Junior College Dragons for winning the 2005 NJCAA basketball championship and extend best wishes to the many individuals who contributed to the team's successful season; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
