                                                                H.C.R. No. 164


HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Don Hedgpeth of Medina is the recipient of the 2004 Wrangler Award for Outstanding Art Book from the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum; and WHEREAS, The Wrangler Award, a bronze sculpture of a cowboy astride his horse, recognizes achievement in 12 categories of music, film, television, and literature in the Western genre; literary categories include Western novel, art book, juvenile book, poetry collection, nonfiction, photography, and magazine article; and WHEREAS, Mr. Hedgpeth was honored for his book, Joe Beeler: Life of a Cowboy Artist, which chronicles its subject's determination to make art his life's work and livelihood; the text includes 125 large photographs of Beeler's sculpture, painting, and drawings; and WHEREAS, Born in Seagraves in 1942, Mr. Hedgpeth has lived in Medina since 1998; he has worked for numerous Western periodicals and contributed to or written 15 books, including Spurs Were a-Jinglin', a history of the Pitchfork Ranch in Wyoming, The Texas Breed, an anthology of cowboy stories, and They Rode Good Horses, a 50-year history of the American Quarter Horse Association; and WHEREAS, Continuing to mine the lands of Texas for rich stories of our state's heritage, Don Hedgpeth creates exceptional tributes to cowboy culture, and it is a privilege to join the museum in honoring his literary accomplishments; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby congratulate Don Hedgpeth on receiving the 2004 Wrangler Award for Outstanding Art Book from the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success and achievement; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Hedgpeth as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
