HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The well-being of the people of Texas depends on economic prosperity throughout the state, and independent businesses that employ Texans and contribute to local trade and industry are important components of a healthy economy and a successful future; and WHEREAS, Edwards Abstract and Title Company has served the needs of businesses and residents of the Rio Grande Valley since 1880, when Judge James Henry Edwards founded the company; after his death in 1925, his widow, Lizzie Edwards, and her sons, Cecil and James Edwards, continued to run this thriving family business, which they incorporated in 1926; and WHEREAS, In 1984, Jesse Hedrick purchased the company, and during his 15 years of ownership he expanded the business from its headquarters in downtown Edinburg to locations in McAllen, Weslaco, Mission, and Sharyland Plantation; the current president and director, Byron Jay Lewis, has ably led the company since 2001; and WHEREAS, Edwards Abstract and Title Company is recognized as a strong supporter and contributor to many civic and nonprofit organizations in South Texas; many of the company's employees volunteer their time to a number of worthy endeavors, including area churches, chambers of commerce, Rotary Clubs, Kiwanis Clubs, Lions Clubs, the Greater McAllen Association of Realtors, the Women's Council of Realtors, and the Hidalgo County Bar Association, to name a few; and WHEREAS, For 125 years, Edwards Abstract and Title Company has enriched the lives of the residents of the Rio Grande Valley by serving many local leading businesses and industries, by employing nearly 80 area Texans who share in the success of the company, and by helping those individuals who are interested in owning their own homes; it is a pleasure to acknowledge the company's rich history and long tradition of service; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby commend Edwards Abstract and Title Company on the 125th anniversary of its founding and pay tribute to all those associated with the business, both past and present; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the company as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
