                                                                H.C.R. No. 180


HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Memories of a life filled with joyful moments and meaningful accomplishments may help to comfort the family and friends of Frances Ellis, who passed away on December 25, 2004, at the age of 91; and WHEREAS, Born on January 8, 1913, in Greenville, Mrs. Ellis attended Wesley Junior College and earned her bachelor's degrees in Latin and English from East Texas State Teachers College and in home economics from Texas State College for Women; for several years, she was a home demonstration agent in Red River, Cass, and Lamar Counties; she eventually became a news columnist for The Paris News, and initiated the first weekly radio broadcast by a home demonstration agent in Texas; and WHEREAS, For more than 45 years, this esteemed Texan devoted herself to beautifying and improving Lamar County; she was instrumental in landscaping the front lawn of Paris Junior College, the downtown plaza, Bywaters Park, and numerous other sites around the city; she was also actively involved in community projects and organizations, including the YWCA, the Paris Rotary Club, the Garden Club, the Lamar County Home Economics Association, the Maxey Museum, First Methodist Church, the Mary Emma Bible Study Club, the public library, and county health and advisory boards; moreover, she served on the Texas Governor's Committee on Aging and as a delegate to the National White House Conference on Aging in 1971; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Ellis was consistently lauded for her good works, receiving countless honors, such as the Woman of the Year award from the Business and Professional Women's Club and the Garden Club Woman of the Year award from the State Fair of Texas; in 1997, the American Cotton Museum in Greenville named a gallery in her honor for her longtime support and contributions; and WHEREAS, Frances Ellis was a treasured citizen of her community, and she will be dearly missed by all those who were privileged to know her and by those who were touched by her deep commitment to Lamar County; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby pay tribute to the life of Frances Ellis and extend deepest sympathy to the members of her family: to her nephew, Tom Arnold; to her nieces, Linda Arnold Cosgrove and Barbara Bird Anderson; and to the other relatives and friends of this beloved civic leader; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in memory of Frances Ellis.
