CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Memories of a life filled with joyful times and
meaningful accomplishments may help to comfort the family and
friends of Wynona Harper Harrison, who passed away on December 7,
2004, at the age of 87; and
WHEREAS, A native Texan, Mrs. Harrison was born in Wills
Point on August 28, 1917, into a family of carpenters and builders,
and she built a rewarding life rich in supportive relationships and
notable successes; a high school honors graduate, she attended
business school in Dallas, trained as a cosmetologist, and at the
age of 18, established a thriving beauty shop in her hometown; in
1939, she left for Dallas to join the Neiman Marcus business family,
and in 1997, she celebrated her 80th birthday with friends at Neiman
Marcus and received an inscribed copy of his book, Minding the
Store, from Stanley Marcus; and
WHEREAS, The former Wynona McKnight became the wife of
Woodrow Wilson "Woody" Harper on February 13, 1944, and together,
the couple created Harper Aircraft Supply and Texas Aviation
Materials at Love Field in Dallas; active in community life, she
belonged to Park Cities Baptist Church, the Reviewers' Book Club,
the Dinner Dance Club, the Willowcrest Garden Club, and Brookhaven
Country Club; and
WHEREAS, Following her husband's passing, this enterprising
businesswoman established First Lady Service, which planned
corporate events for the Dallas business community; and
WHEREAS, Fortunate to find love for a second time, she
married John Winn Harrison II on her birthday in 1966, and the
couple moved to the North Texas city of Paris, where they raised
their five teenagers in a supportive, Christian home; Mrs. Harrison
bought and operated Pine Mill Nursery and took an active civic role
through her affiliations with the Paris Golf and Country Club,
King's Daughters, the Fun and Flowers Garden Club, and the
Newcomers Club; she and her husband initiated a bus ministry in
behalf of the First Baptist Church; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the years, Wynona Harrison brightened
the lives of countless people, who will long remember her with love
and affection; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas
hereby pay tribute to the life of Wynona Harper Harrison and extend
sincere sympathy to the members of her family, including Chip,
Suzy, Holland, Kelly, Preston, Jordan, Lindsey, and Alix Harper;
Ella Ryan, Anne, and Will Biard; Sally, Mac, and Sari Susan McCoy;
Barbara, Don, Greg, Jenny, Shelby, Garrett, Christian, Grant,
Laura, and Julia Wilson; David, Kathy, and Chase Harrison and John
Winn Harrison III; and to all who mourn the passing of this
cherished woman; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in memory of
Wynona Harper Harrison.
