H.C.R. No. 190


HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Floyd Weger, an esteemed resident of Paris, passed away on November 13, 2003, at the age of 90, leaving behind many happy memories for those who were privileged to share in the life of this vibrant member of the community; and WHEREAS, Born in Colbert, Oklahoma, Mr. Weger attended Southeastern State College in Durant and studied trombone at Colorado State University, receiving a master's degree; in 1941, after completing his studies at the Julliard School of Music in New York, he came to Paris with his wife, Irene, who preceded him in death; and WHEREAS, Mr. Weger conducted Paris school bands until his retirement in 1978, excluding three years of service in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, and he continued to serve the community as director of the Paris Municipal Band until 2000; during his tenure with the Paris school system, he guided his bands to some 50 superior ratings in UIL and Tri-States Festival competitions; and WHEREAS, Numerous other honors and awards were lavished on Mr. Weger's bands, including an invitation to play at the 1962 Mideast Bandmasters Association meeting in Pittsburgh and selection as the guest honor band at the 1964 Four-States Bandmasters Association meeting in Texarkana; and WHEREAS, Mr. Weger twice chaired the regional UIL competition and also conducted several notable music clinics at the former East Texas State University and Stephen F. Austin State University; he was a member of the Lamar County Chamber of Commerce and a former Rotarian, and his community endeavors helped to earn him the 1949 Distinguished Service Award from the Paris Jaycees; and WHEREAS, In 1973, Paris ISD officials named the high school's music building the Weger Fine Arts Building, a fitting tribute to the couple's many years as music teachers in the Paris area; and WHEREAS, Twenty years later, Mr. Weger and his wife were selected by the Paris Education Foundation to receive the "I Love Paris" gala award; more than $60,000 was raised in the name of this remarkable couple for the establishment of the Floyd and Irene Weger Scholarship Fund; moreover, the Wegers were honored that day with a mayoral proclamation announcing Floyd and Irene Weger Day in Paris; and WHEREAS, Floyd Weger was a man of great talent, dedication, and community spirit, and although his passing has left a void in the lives of all who knew and loved him, his legacy will remain strong for many years to come; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby pay tribute to the life of Floyd Weger and extend deepest sympathy to his children, Jean Ann Larson and Steve Weger, and to his other relatives, his many friends, and his numerous former students; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in memory of Floyd Weger.
