CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The city of Sulphur Springs celebrated its
sesquicentennial in 2004; and
WHEREAS, Located in Hopkins County, Sulphur Springs was
originally known as Bright Star, a popular camping place for
workers moving goods west from Jefferson; in 1854, a post office was
established, and the name of the town was later changed to Sulphur
Springs to advertise the city's mineral springs and their healing
properties; and
WHEREAS, In 1872, the arrival of the railroad opened the area
for travel and trade, and the cotton industry became central to the
city's economic prosperity; the community also benefited from its
exceptional fruit exports and the rich deposits of oil and gas that
were discovered throughout the county; and
WHEREAS, Today, with more than 14,000 residents, Sulphur
Springs is a thriving county seat, attracting tourists and visitors
with the Hopkins County Museum and Heritage Park, which contains a
number of historic houses, and the Music Box Gallery; and
WHEREAS, With its vibrant sense of community and history, the
city of Sulphur Springs is a treasured asset of the Lone Star State,
and it is a pleasure to pay tribute to this special Texas town and
its forward-looking citizens; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas
hereby commemorate the 150th anniversary of the founding of the
city of Sulphur Springs and recognize the contributions that it has
made to the history of this state.
