H.C.R. No. 226


HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The citizens of Sulphur Springs lost a distinguished civic leader and a valued friend with the passing of Billy T. Burney on March 26, 2003; and WHEREAS, A former Sulphur Springs mayor and city council member, Mr. Burney was truly dedicated to the close-knit community that he was proud to call home; especially devoted to the needs of children, he was an ardent supporter of the Sulphur Springs Public Library and Coleman Park and was posthumously honored with the dedication of the park's upper lake as the B. T. (Bill) Burney Fishing Hole; and WHEREAS, Together with his wife, Jackie, Mr. Burney raised his children to believe that all had a voice in family matters; to that end, when the couple were contemplating establishing their own business in 1981, he called a family meeting to discuss with his loved ones whether he should leave his job of 26 years to embark on this new venture, and everyone got a vote in the decision; this remarkable role model placed a high value on education as well and returned to school and earned his college degree long after graduating from high school; and WHEREAS, In all aspects of his life, Billy Burney set an inspiring example of leadership and commitment to others; though he is deeply missed by all who were privileged to know him, his memory will long endure through the lasting legacy of achievement he has left behind; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby pay tribute to the life of Billy T. Burney and extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his children, Bryan Burney and his wife, Sharon, Dr. Terri Burney Davis, and Suzy Burney Rost and her husband, Tom; to his grandchildren, Kyle, Zach, and Alex Burney and Jacob and Sarah Rost; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in memory of Billy T.
