CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The family and friends of U.S. Army Specialist
Michael Greg Karr, Jr., suffered an immeasurable loss with the
death of this brave young soldier in Iraq on March 31, 2004, at the
age of 23; and
WHEREAS, Inspired to join the army by the events of September
11, 2001, Michael Karr enlisted in June 2002 and was deployed for
Operation Iraqi Freedom in September of the following year; working
as a medic with Company B, 1st Engineer Battalion, 1st Brigade, 1st
Infantry Division, he was killed in action while on patrol
northwest of Habbaniyah; and
WHEREAS, Specialist Karr attended South Garland High School,
where he excelled in both academics and athletics and was a member
of the National Honor Society, Academic Decathlon Team, football
team, and swim team, which he served as captain; after graduating in
the top of his class, this talented young man went on to pursue his
higher education at The University of Texas at Austin; and
WHEREAS, His warm and ever-present smile, his easygoing
nature, and his zest for life endeared him to countless friends, and
his thoughtfulness and concern for others touched many hearts; and
WHEREAS, Notwithstanding the hardships that he faced in a war
zone, Specialist Karr performed his work with pride and
professionalism, his steadfast commitment to his mission made all
the more firm by a strongly felt desire to help the Iraqi people;
and
WHEREAS, Through his unwavering dedication to duty, honor,
and this country, Michael Karr embodied the highest ideals of the
armed services, and the blessing of his life will be forever
treasured by those who were privileged to share in the warmth of his
love and friendship; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas
hereby honor the life of Michael Greg Karr, Jr., and extend deepest
sympathy to his family: to his parents, Kim Sine and Greg and Jill
Karr; to his sisters, Erin Sine and Michele Karr; to his maternal
grandparents, Lewis and Dean Dunson; to his paternal grandparents,
JoAnn Smith and Jim and Glenny Karr; and to all those who mourn the
loss of this beloved young man; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas House
of Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in memory
of Michael Greg Karr, Jr.
