R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Carly Patterson has inscribed her name in sports
history as the second American woman to win the women's gymnastics
individual all-around competition, claiming gold at the 2004
Olympic Games in Athens, Greece; and
WHEREAS, Nicknamed Harley Davidson for her impressive
strength and dexterity, Ms. Patterson dazzled millions of
spectators around the world with a display of pure poise and
athleticism; her powerful tumbling passes during her floor routine
awed audience members as she laid claim to the title that had eluded
the U.S. women's gymnastics team for 20 years; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Patterson outshone her competitors, including
the reigning world champion, with an overall score of 38.387;
driven and focused in the sport since the age of six, she garnered
many trophies and medals before winning gymnastics' premier event,
including winning the 2002 National Junior Championships, the 2003
and 2004 American Cup, and the individual all-around silver and
team gold in the 2003 World Championships; and
WHEREAS, This achievement is the culmination of years of
dedication and training fueled by her unwavering aspiration to
strive for this prestigious title; the Olympics began many
centuries ago as a celebration of humanity's innate fellowship and
potential, and Ms. Patterson has now become a part of that long
tradition and is a source of great pride to the community of Allen,
to the State of Texas, and to our nation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Carly Patterson on winning the gold
medal in the women's gymnastics individual all-around competition
at the Athens 2004 Games of the XXVIII Olympiad and extend to her
best wishes for success in all her future endeavors; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Ms. Patterson as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
