H.R. No. 22 


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, A full and rewarding life came to a close with the passing of Wilma Louise Kendrick Lucas of Abilene on October 14, 2004, at the age of 90; and WHEREAS, Born on July 18, 1914, in Albany, this native Texan spent her childhood on her father's cattle ranch and learned the value and pleasure of a job well done at an early age; proud of the ranching tradition into which she was born, she enjoyed helping her father show the first Polled Hereford steer to be named grand champion of the International Livestock Show in Chicago; and WHEREAS, Following her graduation from Albany High School in 1931, Ms. Lucas enrolled in Abilene Christian College, where she was involved with the GATA social club, the A Cappella Chorus, and the Melpomenian Players; this lovely lady was elected school beauty as well and represented Abilene at the 1934 Texas Cowboy Reunion at Stamford and as a princess at the 1933 Texas State Fair; and WHEREAS, Active in her community, Ms. Lucas shared her time and talents as a member of the Abilene Little Theater, the Abilene Garden Club, the League of Women Voters, the Junior League, the Women's Division of the West Texas Fair, and Highland Church of Christ; she proved her commitment to helping others by co-chairing the Community Chest Fund Drive, serving as chair of the Easter Seal Drive, and raising funds for the American Red Cross; moreover, Ms. Lucas demonstrated her love for her country by working with the World War II Disaster Planning Committee and creating the "Blue Bonnet Brigade," a group of Abilene women who organized activities for soldiers stationed at Camp Barkley; and WHEREAS, In addition, Ms. Lucas worked toward the passage of legislation in 1951 that outlawed the firing of BB guns within the city limits, and her successful efforts have undoubtedly protected countless Texans over the past five decades; and WHEREAS, Despite her many civic involvements, Ms. Lucas also pursued a successful 17-year career as a home economics instructor at Cooper High School and, after retirement, she helped manage her family's oil business; and WHEREAS, Wilma Louise Kendrick Lucas led such a rich and active life that more than 200 relatives, friends, and admirers joined her in celebrating her 90th birthday, and her legacy will surely live on in the many lives she touched and the many good works she performed; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby honor the memory of Wilma Louise Kendrick Lucas and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her daughter, Linda Gregory, and her husband, Sid; to her son, Larry Lucas; to her brother, Phil Kendrick, Jr., and his wife, Kay; to her grandchildren, Estee and Greg Rinehart, Elissa and Scott Boeshart, and Aaron, Jessica, Brice, Nathan, and Tanner Lucas; to her four great-grandchildren; and to the other relatives and many friends of this much-loved woman; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the members of her family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Wilma Louise Kendrick Lucas.
