H.R. No. 23 


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The passing of Dr. Charles Trevathan of Abilene on October 12, 2004, brought a great loss to the family and friends of this trusted and admired gentleman, and it is most appropriate to remember him at this time; and WHEREAS, Dr. Trevathan was born to Clara and Norman Trevathan in St. Louis, Missouri, on April 17, 1936; he graduated from David Lipscomb University in 1958 and earned a law degree from the University of Louisville School of Law in 1961; while attending law school, he married the former Phyllis Murray at East Main Street Church of Christ in Murfreesboro, Tennessee; and WHEREAS, Following a brief stint in the U.S. Army in the early 1960s, Dr. Trevathan began a 25-year career practicing law in Kentucky; his interests later turned toward the field of education, and in 1987 he was named associate general counsel at Abilene Christian University; and WHEREAS, From 1991 to 1997, Dr. Trevathan served ACU as vice president for campus life, while maintaining his position as associate general counsel; he joined the faculty as professor of sociology in 1997, and his skill in the classroom was later evidenced by his selection as ACU's Teacher of the Year in 2001; and WHEREAS, Throughout his distinguished career as a lawyer and educator, Dr. Trevathan enjoyed the love and support of his wife, Phyllis, and his daughters, Carol, Julie, and Karen; he found additional strength and sense of purpose through his affiliation with Hillcrest Church of Christ; and WHEREAS, Charles Trevathan was a man of compassion and generosity, and though his passing has left a void in the lives of those who knew and loved him, his spirit will remain with them always; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Dr. Charles Trevathan and that sincere sympathy be extended to the members of his family: to his wife, Phyllis Trevathan; to his daughters, Carol Turner and her husband, Russ, Julie Bowie, and Karen Trevathan Gunn and her husband, Tim; to his grandchildren, Jackson Turner, Aidan Bowie, Elora Gunn, and William Gunn; and to his numerous adopted sons and daughters and his other friends and relatives; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dr. Charles Trevathan.
