R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Honorable Robert D. Price, former U.S. congressman and Texas state senator, passed away on August 24, 2004, at the age of 76, leaving a void in the lives of his many admirers; and WHEREAS, A native of Reading, Kansas, Bob Price was born in 1927 and attended Oklahoma State University; he graduated in 1951 and married the former Martha "Marty" White that same year; and WHEREAS, This patriotic American served his country as a U.S. Air Force fighter pilot during the Korean War; he flew 27 combat missions and was awarded an Air Medal for his courageous service; and WHEREAS, For most of his life, Congressman Price lived in Pampa, where he farmed and ranched for 50 years; his Panhandle ranch spanned four counties and had been in the Price family since 1907; and WHEREAS, It was in the 1960s that he first displayed an interest in politics, campaigning for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives; a pioneering member of the Republican Party, he was elected to the house in 1966 and served until 1974; while in office, he served on the House Agriculture Committee and sat on the Manned Space Flight and NASA Oversight Subcommittees; and WHEREAS, Congressman Price won a special election to fill a vacancy in the Texas Senate in 1977, campaigning with the slogan, "Price is right for Texas"; returning to his ranching and farming operation full-time in 1980, he continued to maintain an interest in politics and remained a popular figure in the Republican Party throughout his life; and WHEREAS, Congressman Price was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church and Pampa Masonic Lodge No. 966 A.F. & A.M.; a former member of the Downtown Kiwanis Club, he also held membership in the El Paso Scottish Rite Consistory, Khiva Shrine Temple of Amarillo, and the Pampa Shrine Club; and WHEREAS, Recognized for his sense of humor, strength of conviction, and dedication to public service, Bob Price sought to make a positive difference in the lives of others, and he leaves behind a legacy of achievement that will surely inspire those who will follow in his footsteps; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of the Honorable Robert D. Price and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Marty Price; to his son, Carl Price; to his daughter, Janice Johnson; to his brother, Ben Price, Jr.; and to the many other relatives and friends of this esteemed gentleman; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Robert D. Price.
