R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The passing of Rear Admiral Sam Moore of Marshall on December 28, 2004, at the age of 86, has left a void in the lives of those who knew and loved this exceptional gentleman; and WHEREAS, Born in Rugby in 1918, Sam Moore joined the U.S. Navy after graduating from Paris Junior College and East Texas State University; his military service began during World War II and involved conquering challenging assignments such as commanding minesweepers and guided missile cruisers, and it extended to active duty during the Vietnam War; over the course of his distinguished 36-year career, he was honored with more than 30 awards, including two Distinguished Service Medals, three Legions of Merit, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, and the National Order of Vietnam; and WHEREAS, From 1970 to 1977, Admiral Moore lived in Washington, D.C., and worked at the Pentagon; there he distinguished himself behind the scenes as budget director and deputy comptroller for the navy and commander of the military sealift command; and WHEREAS, Soon after retiring from the navy in 1977, Admiral Moore settled in Marshall, where he extended his pragmatic, can-do attitude to his life there by staying active in the community and volunteering to lead multiple projects; he always worked tirelessly in behalf of veterans, coordinating with the Marshall Economic Development Corporation to help bring a veteran's home to the city; and WHEREAS, Admiral Moore also served as president of the Marshall Rotary Club and the Citizen's Advisory Council and acted on numerous boards, including the Marshall Regional Arts Council, the Michelson Museum of Art, Marshall Depot, Inc., the Harrison County Appraisal Board, the Marshall Civic Center Advisory Board, and the Greater Marshall Chamber of Commerce Board; moreover, he was an active member of the East Texas Council of Governments, the Marshall City Commission, and the Civil Service Commission; in recognition of his numerous accomplishments as a civic leader, he was named Marshall's Outstanding Citizen in 1991; and WHEREAS, A devoted husband and father, Sam Moore was a much-loved member of the Marshall community, and his patriotic service to his country will not soon be forgotten, nor will his contributions to the city of Marshall; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Rear Admiral Sam Moore and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Charlene; to his daughter, Margaret Ann Goldstein, and her husband, Jonathan; to his sisters, Hazel Johnson and Lois Leslie; to his granddaughters, Melissa and Emilie; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Rear Admiral Sam Moore.
