H.R. No. 39
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Professor John C. Perez of Texas A&M
University-Kingsville has been named one of Hispanic Business
magazine's 100 Most Influential Hispanics in America for 2004; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Perez is well known to his professional peers as
the director of the Natural Toxins Research Center (NTRC) at Texas
A&M-Kingsville, and his dedicated efforts in the areas of
immunology, bioinstrumentation, and cell physiology have laid the
groundwork for future generations of researchers; and
WHEREAS, After receiving his doctorate from Utah State
University in 1972, Dr. Perez joined the faculty at the Texas
A&M-Kingsville biology department, and for more than three decades
he has been a vital and valued member of the university community;
it was under his direction that the NTRC received a $2.5 million
research grant from the National Center for Research Resources; and
WHEREAS, In addition to his duties as a regents professor,
faculty member, and NTRC director, Dr. Perez has served as director
of Texas A&M-Kingsville's NIH/Research Infrastructure in Minority
Institutions since 1996; a co-contributor on more than 35 published
works, he was named the 2004 Distinguished Texas Scientist by the
Texas Academy of Science and the Outstanding Faculty Researcher at
the 5th Annual Minority Access Incorporated National Role Model
Conference and has received the Olan Kruse Science Faculty Award,
the Undergraduate Institution Mentoring Award, and the Texas A&I
Alumni Association Distinguished Research Award; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Perez was selected for this latest honor by
Hispanic Business for his many achievements as a researcher as well
as for his heartfelt commitment to furthering the education of his
students; and
WHEREAS, Untold numbers of young scientists have discovered
their true calling under the steady guidance of Dr. Perez, and the
benefits of both his wise mentorship and his diligent research will
benefit the greater scientific community for many years to come;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Professor John C. Perez on being
named one of Hispanic Business magazine's 100 Most Influential
Hispanics in America for 2004; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Dr. Perez as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
