R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The family and friends of Elbert Davis Stewart, Jr.,
of Houston were profoundly saddened at the passing of this esteemed
Texan on May 10, 2004, at the age of 77; and
WHEREAS, Born on January 18, 1927, in El Paso, Mr. Stewart
served in the United States Navy after graduating from high school,
and then attended New Mexico State University, where he earned a
bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering; later moving
to Houston, Mr. Stewart was employed by Westinghouse Electrical
Corporation, and after many successful years with that company, he
joined Power Systems Engineering and Artisan Field; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Stewart was equipped with a quick smile and a
knack for conversation that earned him numerous lasting friendships
throughout his life; a man of many interests, he especially enjoyed
hunting, photography, stamp collecting, and sailing; and
WHEREAS, On December 1, 1955, he married the love of his life,
Jane Peden, and their enduring union was blessed with two sons and a
daughter as well as two grandchildren and a great-granddaughter;
and
WHEREAS, Mr. Stewart played an active role in the community
on the board of trustees at The Kinkaid School, Avon Old Farms
School, the Associate Vestry at St. John the Divine Episcopal
Church, the Executive Association of Houston, and the Downtown
Kiwanis Club; moreover, he was a member of the Masons and the
Houston Country Club and was the founding chairman of the board of
the Houston Ear Research Foundation; and
WHEREAS, Though Elbert Stewart will be deeply missed by the
family and friends with whom he shared the richness of his life, he
will be remembered with love and affection for many years to come;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Elbert Davis Stewart,
Jr., and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to
his beloved wife, Jane; to his other loved ones, including Elbert
Davis Stewart III and his wife, Sarah; Ardath Amanda Stewart;
Edward Peden Stewart and his wife, Barbara; Sara Jane Cantwell and
her husband, Chad; Grace Elaine Cantwell; Evan Davis Stewart;
Thomas Peden Rogers and his wife, Jeana; and to his other relatives
and many friends; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Elbert
Davis Stewart, Jr.
