R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, For half a century, J. O. Barrera has served as the Duval County veterans service officer, and his work in behalf of the individuals responsible for keeping our nation free is indeed worthy of special praise; and WHEREAS, Following his tour of duty with the U.S. Army in World War II and a decade of employment with the Duval County tax collector's office, Mr. Barrera was appointed to his present position, and even though he was offered the opportunity to serve in the same role for the State Veterans Affairs Commission of Texas in San Antonio, he declined that move in order to continue serving the veterans of Duval County; and WHEREAS, Mr. Barrera has been lauded time and time again for his work; recognized as the outstanding veterans service officer for the 60-county San Antonio Region in 1979, he was honored at the 52nd Annual Statewide Conference for Veterans Service Affairs in 1999 and received the National Commander's Appreciation Certificate given by the American Veterans Organization Office that same year; in 2000, Mr. Barrera garnered the prestigious Dan Garcia Award and was named an outstanding county service officer at the 2000 Statewide Training Conference for Veterans Service of Texas; and WHEREAS, Through his dedication to his fellow veterans, J. O. Barrera has exemplified the highest standards of excellence and leadership and bettered the lives of countless Texans who have valiantly defended our nation; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby commend J. O. Barrera for his unfaltering dedication and indispensable care to the veterans of Duval County and their families and extend to him best wishes for the years ahead; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Barrera as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
