R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The certain knowledge of a life well lived may temper the profound sadness that the passing of Roy Evans, at the age of 79, brings to all those who loved this good man; and WHEREAS, A committed civil rights and workers' compensation advocate, Mr. Evans was an incomparable leader in Texas organized labor who helped provide a strong voice for many in the Lone Star State; and WHEREAS, He dedicated his time and energy to a host of organizations over the years, including the International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW), the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU), International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers (IAM), International Union of Electronic, Electrical, Salaried, Machine and Furniture Workers (IUE), the Newspaper Guild, and the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE); and WHEREAS, Mr. Evans rose through the ranks by his hard work and astute leadership to become administrative vice-president of the CIO, president of a UAW local, and public relations director, secretary-treasurer, and president of the Texas AFL-CIO, a position in which he served with distinction from 1971 to 1973; and WHEREAS, Among the many accomplishments realized during his exceptional career, Mr. Evans served as a labor negotiator during talks over workers' compensation reform, on the Industrial Accident Board, as the first president of the Texas Labor Movement Foundation, and as a workers' compensation advisor and liaison for the U.S. Department of Labor; he was duly recognized for his significant efforts in 2000, when he was inducted into the Texas Labor Hall of Fame; and WHEREAS, Roy Evans was a man of great vision who dedicated much of his life to improving the working conditions of countless Texans; though his special presence will be missed by all who knew him, his spirit will surely live on in the hearts of the many people whose lives he touched; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Roy Evans and extend sincere sympathy to all those who mourn the passing of this extraordinary man; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Roy Evans.
