H.R. No. 80
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, A 90th birthday is indeed cause for a celebration,
and on January 29, 2005, Oliver Wendell Sprott, Sr., of Beaumont is
commemorating this milestone at a party in his honor; and
WHEREAS, Born on February 1, 1915, in Beaumont, Mr. Sprott
was a member of the Charlton Pollard High School Class of 1932; he
attended Tuskegee Institute in Alabama before transferring to Wiley
College, where he received his bachelor of arts degree; during his
time at Wiley, he also earned All Conference honors as a center on
the school football team; and
WHEREAS, Following college, Mr. Sprott served his country as
a member of the United States Army, attaining the rank of staff
sergeant; honorably discharged in 1945, he returned to Beaumont
and, like his father before him, became a letter carrier for the
United States Postal Service; he worked at the Tobe Hahn Station
throughout his notable 35-year career in public service; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sprott married the love of his life, Gladys
Marie Harley, in 1947, and their rewarding marriage was richly
blessed with three children, Oliver W. Sprott, Jr., LaRita Gail
Sprott, and Alisa Danell Sprott; when his children were younger,
Mr. Sprott enjoyed traveling with his family and attending sporting
events; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed gentleman is a devoted congregant at
St. James United Methodist Church and a valued member of Alpha Phi
Alpha Fraternity and the Appomattox Club; and
WHEREAS, Oliver Sprott has demonstrated outstanding
patriotism in the service of his country, unfailing integrity in
his work, and an inspiring dedication to his loved ones and his
community, and it is a distinct pleasure to join his family and
friends in honoring him at this special time; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby warmly congratulate Oliver Wendell Sprott, Sr.,
on the joyous occasion of his 90th birthday and extend to him
heartfelt best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. Sprott as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
