H.R. No. 100
R E S O L U T I O N

Representatives is proud to recognize the outstanding
contributions our state's many osteopathic physicians have made to
the health and well-being of their fellow Texans; and
WHEREAS, Osteopathic medicine was founded by Andrew Taylor
Still, an Army physician who served in the Civil War and developed
osteopathic techniques as an alternative to the primitive and often
woefully inadequate medical treatment that he observed being
administered to wounded soldiers; and
WHEREAS, Emphasizing comprehensive care and specialized
treatment based on each patient's needs, osteopathic physicians
focus on the individual, rather than the illness, taking into
account the person's lifestyle and home, work, and social
environment; and
WHEREAS, These dedicated professionals offer a wide range of
health care services, including family and general practice,
internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, and pediatrics; and
WHEREAS, Texas is home to nearly 2,500 licensed osteopathic
physicians, with increasing numbers of female, Hispanic, and
African American practitioners, reflecting the diversity in the
state's population; osteopathic physicians treat individuals
throughout the state, including citizens in rural and other
underserved areas, providing excellent primary care and preventive
medical services to those patients; and
WHEREAS, The University of North Texas Health Science
Center's Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine trains many of these
physicians, who enter primary care residencies in numbers well
above the national average; and
WHEREAS, During the week of April 18-22, 2005, osteopathic
physicians are taking time out of their busy schedules to share
their expertise with the legislative community by volunteering for
the "Doctor of the Day" program at the State Capitol; their visit to
the Capitol today provides a fitting opportunity to acknowledge the
excellent service these physicians provide to citizens of the Lone
Star State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby recognize January 27, 2005, as Osteopathic
Medicine Day at the State Capitol and commend the osteopathic
physicians of Texas for their important work.
