H.R. No. 110
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The certain knowledge of a life well lived may
temper the profound sadness that the passing of ZerNona Stewart
Black of San Antonio brings to all who loved this inspiring woman,
who died on January 24, 2005, at the age of 93; and
WHEREAS, A graduate of the prestigious Emerson College in
Boston, Mrs. Black valued the importance of education and continued
her studies at the University of Colorado, Indiana University, Our
Lady of the Lake University, and Trinity University; and
WHEREAS, She went on to touch the lives of countless young
people as an instructor at Langston College and later at St.
Philip's College, teaching a number of different courses during her
distinguished career, including communication, drama, speech,
radio, and physical education; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed woman was a true leader in her
community who gave generously of her time and talents wherever she
felt she could lend a hand; she served as executive director of the
Alpha Tau Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority's Eastside
Senior Citizens' Project and established the first multi-service
center for the elderly; active in the National Council of Negro
Women, Inc., she also distinguished herself as director of Health
Incorporated, a day care service for the elderly, chair of the Pine
Street YWCA, and supervisor of the Youth National Baptist Program;
and
WHEREAS, A deeply spiritual woman, Mrs. Black served
alongside her accomplished husband, the Reverend Claude William
Black, Jr., at Mount Zion First Baptist Church for more than half a
century; she supported the Ministers, Deacons, and Trustees' Wives
Council and drama ministry, and she also served the congregation as
Women's Day chairlady and as a Sunday school and vacation Bible
school teacher; and
WHEREAS, Fondly called "Miss Personality," ZerNona Stewart
Black led a bountiful life of purpose and spread joy to all who were
privileged to know her; although she will be greatly missed, her
legacy will live on in the hearts of those whose lives she touched
and in her many important contributions to the people of San
Antonio; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby honor the life of ZerNona Stewart Black and
extend deepest sympathy to her family: to her husband of 58 years,
the Reverend Claude William Black, Jr.; to her grandson, Taj Ian
Matthews; to her granddaughter, Chantey Matthews; to her
great-grandchildren; to her cousin, Dr. John Q. Taylor King; and to
all those who mourn the passing of this beloved woman; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the members of her family and that when the Texas House
of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of ZerNona
Stewart Black.
