R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is pleased to recognize February 2, 2005, as Texas Southern University Day at the State Capitol; and WHEREAS, Established by the Texas Legislature on March 3, 1947, Texas Southern University offers degrees in a wide variety of programs, including pharmacy, dentistry, arts and sciences, journalism, law, and other fields of specialization; and WHEREAS, TSU students come from diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and racial backgrounds, and not only from throughout Texas, but also from almost every other state and more than 50 nations; and WHEREAS, The school is proud to have conferred degrees to many individuals who have gone on to become outstanding public servants; for example, three Texas Southern University graduates have been elected to the United States Congress, the late Honorable Barbara Jordan, the late Honorable George "Mickey" Leland, and the Honorable Craig Washington; and WHEREAS, Texas Southern University has earned a reputation for drawing the largest concentration of multiethnic scholars in the world to teach and carry out research on the campus; these individuals have provided Texas and the nation with a wealth of expertise on important world issues; and WHEREAS, The members of the board of trustees, the faculty, and the administration of Texas Southern University are committed to providing students with an education that combines critical thinking and creativity with high-quality instruction, and their success in their endeavor will provide a lasting benefit for this state and nation; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby express appreciation to Texas Southern University for its many contributions to the State of Texas and extend best wishes to all who are participating in Texas Southern University Day at the Capitol; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for the university as an expression of esteem from the Texas House of Representatives.
