H.R. No. 152


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The 75th birthday of a notable Texan is truly cause for celebration, and it is indeed appropriate to recognize Eli Davis of Dallas, who commemorated this joyous occasion on October 12, 2004; and WHEREAS, Mr. Davis graduated from Fort Worth's I. M. Terrell High School and received his bachelor of science degree from Mary Allen College and his master of education degree from Prairie View A&M University; a veteran of the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves for 27 years before his honorable discharge as a master sergeant; and WHEREAS, Mr. Davis went on to give 33 years of sterling service to the Dallas ISD; during his tenure, he was a mathematics and science teacher, an assistant principal at the elementary, junior high, and high school levels, and a principal at the elementary school he once attended; and WHEREAS, During his years as an in-service classroom teacher and administrator, he participated in numerous educational organizations, ranging from the Classroom Teachers of Dallas, the Texas State Teachers Association, and the National Education Association to the Dallas School Administrators Association, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, and the Texas Elementary Principal and Supervisors Association; in addition, Mr. Davis was one of the original members of the Dallas ISD Communication Committee, which was established to address employee grievances; and WHEREAS, This caring gentleman has spent his life in service to his fellow citizens, and his innumerable contributions include his leadership with the PTA, Boy Scouts of America, the Omicron Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma, Greater New Zion Baptist Church, the Mary Allen College National Alumni Association, the Dallas Civil Service Board, and the Dallas Health and Human Services Commission; and WHEREAS, Mr. Davis has also played an active role in political affairs; his efforts in this regard have included service as a 23rd Senatorial State Democratic Executive Committeeman, a delegate to the Democratic National Convention, and the chair of a delegation to the Texas Democratic Convention; moreover, he continues to make significant contributions to the betterment of this state as a valued staff member for Texas House District 110; and WHEREAS, The deserving recipient of numerous honors through the years, Mr. Davis was commissioned an Honorary Texas Ranger and made a special assistant to the governor; he may also list among his accolades a special service award from the Texas Coalition of Black Democrats, a Boy Scouts of America Merit Award, the Distinguished Leadership Award from the Dallas ISD, and a life membership in the Texas PTA; and WHEREAS, Demonstrating the highest ideals of public service, Eli Davis has long given back to his community and state, and the example that he sets for all who know him is truly commendable; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Eli Davis on his 75th birthday and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Davis as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
