R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Family and friends of Margie Beal Dennis of Dallas
gathered on September 18, 2004, to celebrate the 90th birthday of
this remarkable Texan; and
WHEREAS, Born on September 13, 1914, and raised in Freestone
County, Mrs. Dennis has been deeply devoted to both her family and
her faith; with her husband, Willie Leroy Dennis, she became the
proud parent of a daughter, Betty Dennis Davis, and over the years
she was blessed with a son-in-law, Ellis Davis, Jr., three
grandchildren, Dennis and Rodney Davis and Ellis Davis III, and
five great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Dennis attended Bishop College Extension and
graduated from several Christian educational institutions--the
Southern Bible Training School, Interracial Bible Institute, and
Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary; and
WHEREAS, With steadfast dedication, she has spent decades
putting her faith into practice, teaching Bible study classes,
making weekly visits to the infirm and elderly, and, for more than
39 years, conducting religious services at the city jail; a member
of the Good Street Baptist Church, she has also been involved with a
number of its ministries, including the Missionary Society, the
Senior Citizen Ministry, the Social Service Committee, Sunday
school, the Nurses Guild, and Vacation Bible School, which has been
renamed to commemorate her contributions as its principal; and
WHEREAS, A host of organizations, both religious and secular,
have recognized her generosity and selflessness; she has received
the Outstanding Texan Award from the Texas Legislative Black
Caucus, Volunteer of the Year and Women's Day of Service Award from
Good Street Baptist Church, Women of Distinction Award from the Eta
Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Caring Spirit Community Champion Award
from the American Cancer Society, and Sojourner Truth Award from
the South Central Business and Professional Women's Club, in
addition to being inducted into the Juanita Craft Hall of Fame and
garnering numerous other accolades; and
WHEREAS, Margie Dennis has had an immeasurable impact on the
lives of countless members of her community, and her compassion and
kindness have been a well of strength to those in need; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Margie Beal Dennis on her 90th
birthday and commend her for her long, unwavering commitment and
service to her community; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mrs. Dennis as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
