R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Dr. Mamie McKnight of Dallas is receiving a Profiles
in Leadership Award from the Southern Methodist University Women's
Symposium on February 21, 2005; and
WHEREAS, The Profiles in Leadership Award recognizes the
accomplishments of Texas women who have made a significant impact
on the city of Dallas and on the quality of life for women overall;
Dr. McKnight is being honored for her work with Black Dallas
Remembered, Inc., an historical research and community education
organization, as well as her career of community service; and
WHEREAS, A native of Dallas, this accomplished woman
graduated from Lincoln High School as valedictorian, received her
bachelor's and master's degrees in mathematics and chemistry from
Prairie View A&M College, and earned her doctorate from North Texas
State University in counseling psychology and student personnel
administration; she has taught mathematics and acted as a counselor
in several Dallas public schools, and she has distinguished herself
in a number of administrative positions with the Dallas County
Community College District and as an administrator of special
projects at the University of North Texas at Dallas; and
WHEREAS, In 1983, Dr. McKnight founded Black Dallas
Remembered, Inc., as a way to preserve and promote African American
history in Dallas; several years ago, the nonprofit organization
began operating the city-owned Juanita J. Craft Civil Rights House,
a museum and learning center, and later received a generous gift
from the Hill-Smith family, a 2,900-square-foot ranch-style house
in the State-Thomas historic neighborhood of Dallas, which
currently serves as a museum, rental space, and library for the
organization's archives; and
WHEREAS, In addition to serving as executive director of
Black Dallas Remembered and producing numerous publications and
presentations on education and African American history, Dr.
McKnight has also led preservation efforts as chair of the Dallas
Landmark Commission and the Texas Historical Commission Review
Board; in 1999, she was appointed by the governor to a six-year term
on the Texas Historical Commission and she has received numerous
awards, including the first Maurine F. Bailey Award, the University
of North Texas Outstanding Alumna Award, the Dallas Black Chamber
of Commerce Willow Award, and induction into the Texas Women's Hall
of Fame; and
WHEREAS, Blessed with a devoted and loving family, Mamie
McKnight has been supported in all her endeavors by her husband,
Elza, her daughter, Ginger, her son-in-law, Kevin, and her
granddaughter, Cameron; her extraordinary achievements as a
community leader have distinguished her as a much-treasured citizen
of Dallas, and she is indeed deserving of this prestigious award;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Mamie McKnight on her receipt
of a 2005 Profiles in Leadership Award and commend her for her
outstanding professional accomplishments and civic contributions;
and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Dr. McKnight as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
