R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Words cannot express how the loss of United States Marine Lance Corporal Michael S. Torres, at the age of 21, has affected his family and his fellow students and alumni of Cathedral High School in El Paso; and WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Torres was a 2002 graduate of Cathedral High School, a Christian Brothers school rich in academic tradition that for 80 years has emphasized God, country, and family; as an alumnus of this fine institution, he, like thousands of graduates, was educated in an environment where his mind was taught and his heart was touched; and WHEREAS, During his character-building years at Cathedral High School, Lance Corporal Torres always placed himself in leadership roles; he was a classroom leader during each of his four years and was an integral member of the Cathedral "Fighting Irish" football team, excelling as a defensive player; and WHEREAS, Heeding the call inspired by the values he learned as a "Christian Brothers boy," he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served his country with the utmost distinction; and WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Torres was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force out of Twentynine Palms, California; he was killed in action by enemy forces on July 5, 2004, in the Anbar province of Iraq; and WHEREAS, Over the years, Cathedral High School has graduated many young Texans who have opted to forego their immediate dreams of a higher education in order to pursue a higher calling; Michael S. Torres of the Class of 2002 made the ultimate sacrifice in service to this great country; and WHEREAS, Thoughts and prayers go out to all those whose lives Michael Torres touched; he was a Marine of honor and valor, and those who knew and cherished him will forever carry him close in their hearts; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby pay special tribute to the life of U.S. Marine Lance Corporal Michael S. Torres and extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his father, Colonel Michael A. Torres, M.D., United States Air Force; to his mother, Rossana Esparza; to his brother, Gregory Michael Torres; to his sisters, Karina Esparza, Stephanie Torres, and Misty Torres; and to the students and alumni of Cathedral High School; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and for "Irish Hall" at Cathedral High School and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of United States Marine Lance Corporal Michael S.
