R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, With the passing of the Honorable Thomas Anthony Korioth on May 29, 2004, at the age of 71, the State of Texas lost a remarkable man, one who made a profound difference in the world around him; and WHEREAS, A native of Sherman and a graduate of St. Edward's University and The University of Texas School of Law, Mr. Korioth was a champion of civil rights, a bold advocate for those in need, and a lover of life in all its diversity; over the course of his illustrious career, he served with the utmost distinction as a legislator in the Texas House of Representatives from 1957 to 1961, as assistant counsel to the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and as a member of the Texas Industrial Accident Board; and WHEREAS, Mr. Korioth fought wholeheartedly in behalf of the disenfranchised, never backing down from a challenge in his lifelong pursuit of social justice; he helped to ensure the "one man, one vote" policy for all Texans, and as chairman of the Governor's Task Force on Farm Workers' Compensation, he was key to gaining precedent-setting compensation coverage for farm workers; and WHEREAS, A prolific speaker and author, Mr. Korioth wrote A Guide to Texas Workers' Compensation and Digest of Workers' Compensation Law, and coauthored the Texas Workers' Compensation Desk Book; in addition, he served as general counsel to the Texas Municipal League Intergovernmental Risk Pool and counsel to Walker, Bright and Lewis, P.C.; and WHEREAS, Highly regarded as a mentor, Mr. Korioth was claimed as a dear friend by countless people; a teacher in every sense, he served as a shining example of benevolence, charity, and activism, and by touching the lives of so many, he has ensured that his life's work will persevere; and WHEREAS, Courageous and passionate, Tony Korioth was a trusted advocate for change, and although he will be deeply missed, his memory will live on in the hearts of all who were privileged to know him; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of the Honorable Thomas Anthony Korioth and extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Claire; to his children, Tommy, William, John, and Ann; and to all those who mourn the passing of this beloved gentleman; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Thomas Anthony Korioth.
