R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Proud Denton County residents are gathering at the
Texas Capitol on February 15, 2005, to celebrate their county's
unique and valuable contributions to the commerce and culture of
the Lone Star State; and
WHEREAS, Created in 1846, Denton County was named for pioneer
preacher and lawyer John Bunyan Denton, and its present-day
residents are apt successors to the county's namesake in their
independent spirit and love of learning; and
WHEREAS, Denton County is the home of two of the state's
finest universities, Texas Woman's University and the University of
North Texas, which were founded as Girls' Industrial College and
Texas Normal College in 1890 and 1903, respectively, and the alumni
of these schools have gone on to make their mark on the history of
Texas and the nation; and
WHEREAS, The early years of the county saw its emergence as an
agricultural center, and the arrival of the railroads in the 1880s
ensured that the area's wheat and cotton would find distribution
across the country; and
WHEREAS, More recently, Denton County's agricultural bounty
has been matched by its cultural and entertainment offerings, and
visitors come to the area to participate in such diverse events as
the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival, the North Texas State Fair, the
Arts, Antiques, & Autos Extravaganza, and the Festival of Lights;
and
WHEREAS, Further attractions in the Denton area include the
displays of the University of North Texas Planetarium, the
architecture of the Denton County Courthouse, and the action of the
Texas Motor Speedway; and
WHEREAS, Denton County's storied past is but prelude to its
dynamic present and promising future, and we join its citizens in
saluting one of the Lone Star State's important regions; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby recognize February 15, 2005, as Denton County
Day at the State Capitol and extend best wishes to the members of
the visiting delegation for an enjoyable and memorable stay in
Austin.
