R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, February 9, 2005, is a special day at the State Capitol, where proud residents of Jim Wells County are gathering to celebrate their region's distinctive contributions to the Lone Star State; and WHEREAS, Located on the fertile south coastal plains, Jim Wells County is heir to a long and proud tradition of cattle ranching, and Alice, the county seat, was a major cattle shipping center before the turn of the last century; and WHEREAS, In the years since the county's creation in 1911, the local economy has expanded to encompass gas and oil production as well as farming, with such important crops as wheat, corn, cotton, sorghum, and melons, and sunflowers for sunflower oil; and WHEREAS, In addition to its agriculture and commerce, the county is home to Alice Regional Hospital and CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital-Alice, and it is important as a health care hub for South Texas; and WHEREAS, Mindful of the region's colorful history, Jim Wells residents have sought to preserve and promote their heritage in museums such as the South Texas Museum and the Tejano R.O.O.T.S. Hall of Fame Museum, and visitors to these institutions leave them with a deep appreciation of those attributes that make Jim Wells unique among Texas counties; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby recognize February 9, 2005, as Jim Wells County Day at the State Capitol and welcome the delegation present on this day.
