R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Residents of Walker County are gathering on February 15, 2005, at the State Capitol to share their justifiable pride in this unique region of the Lone Star State; and WHEREAS, Nestled among the gently rolling green hills of the East Texas Piney Woods, Walker County is abundant in natural resources, and its sparkling waterways and plentiful wildlife make it an outdoor enthusiast's paradise; and WHEREAS, Created in 1846 from a section of Montgomery County, Walker County was originally named for U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Robert J. Walker but was renamed in 1863 for Texas Ranger Captain Samuel H. Walker; and WHEREAS, The county's largest and best-known employer is the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, and the county seat, Huntsville, is well known to students of Texas history as the adopted hometown of General Sam Houston, president of the Republic of Texas, U.S. senator, governor of both Texas and Tennessee, and hero of the Battle of San Jacinto; and WHEREAS, Walker County's colorful past is on display not only at the Sam Houston Memorial Museum but also at the H.E.A.R.T.S. Veterans Museum and the Texas Prison Museum, while its bright future is well represented by the talented students readying themselves for their own careers at Sam Houston State University and by the current and future civic leaders who have graduated from the Huntsville Leadership Institute; and WHEREAS, The full-time residents of Walker County likewise eagerly anticipate the weeks and years to come as their beloved home continues to grow and flourish, nourished by a past rich in history; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature recognize February 15, 2005, as Walker County Day at the State Capitol and extend best wishes to all those visiting for an enjoyable and memorable day.
