H.R. No. 196
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The passing of Joe G. Diaz on December 20, 2004, at
the age of 76, concluded an active life of selfless volunteerism and
public service in South Texas; and
WHEREAS, A native of Edinburg, Mr. Diaz bravely served his
country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II before
returning to his beloved Rio Grande Valley in 1946; and
WHEREAS, Employed by Waukesha Pearce in San Juan for nearly
40 years, Mr. Diaz was passionate about volunteerism and the
political process; he was elected as an Edinburg city commissioner
in 1972 and served two terms in that role; and
WHEREAS, In 1983, Mr. Diaz emerged from retirement to act as a
coordinator for the County of Hidalgo Community Service Agency, a
post he held until 1995; he extended his commitment to helping
people, and specifically aiding the elderly, by serving as a
council member for the Area Agency on Aging and as a representative
to the Texas Silver Haired Legislature; and
WHEREAS, Preceded in death by his beloved wife Alicia, this
devoted family man logged countless hours as a volunteer for
organizations such as the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program in
Hidalgo County and the Borderfest Association; and
WHEREAS, Joe Diaz was an entertaining and straight-talking
public figure who always spoke his mind, often in support of the
Democratic Party or the Tripas Club; a hospitable, down-to-earth
gentleman, he was a much-loved citizen of Hidalgo County and will
long be remembered by those who knew him and those who were touched
by his deep commitment to community service; and
WHEREAS, Representative Aaron Peña has justly recognized Joe
G. Diaz by passing this resolution in his memory during the Regular
Session of the 79th Texas Legislature; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Joe G. Diaz and extend
sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his sons, David
Diaz, Omar Diaz, and Joe Diaz, Jr., and his wife, Adelita Diaz; to
his daughters, Delma Diaz and Annette Franz and her husband, John
David Franz; to his brothers, Robert Diaz and Gilbert Garcia; to his
sister, Hilda Duarte; to his 12 grandchildren and 7
great-grandchildren; and to the many other relatives and friends of
this esteemed gentleman; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Joe G.
Diaz.
