R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Hunger remains one of the most critical issues of
our time, and the members of the Texas Association of Second Harvest
Food Banks are striving to combat this persistent problem; and
WHEREAS, Founded in 1986, this notable organization is
composed of 18 food banks from throughout the Lone Star State; the
association's members provide sustenance to people in need in all
254 counties in Texas and, in 2004 alone, supplied more than one
million meals; member food banks are all affiliates of America's
Second Harvest, which distributes food and grocery products through
a nationwide network and works to increase public awareness of
domestic hunger; and
WHEREAS, A recipient of the Texas Surplus Agricultural
Product Grant, which enables Texas growers to donate excess food to
help feed the hungry, the association also draws on its close
relationship with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice; Second
Harvest works with that agency to distribute surplus fresh produce
grown on prison land while helping inmates gain valuable work
experience and certifications; and
WHEREAS, Working to alleviate hunger is truly an admirable
endeavor, and the members of the Texas Association of Second
Harvest Food Banks truly merit the appreciation of all Texans for
the important work that they do; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby recognize February 16, 2005, as Texas
Association of Second Harvest Food Banks Day at the State Capitol
and extend to the visiting members of this organization a warm
welcome; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the association as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
